When you think of Digital Enterprise Management, you likely assume it’s all about business and tech. While that’s half-true, the creativity can take you by surprise! See for example, DEMA’s upcoming collaborative event with the Design Hub (TDH), the DESIGNATHON; it is a hybrid event between a hackathon, design sprint, and traditional case competition.

If you are someone who does not have experience in competing in case competitions, this event is for you! This event judges based on creativity and effort in developing an innovative means to make real change. This competition is great for those looking to gain experience in leadership, research, and design. Most importantly, it is an inclusive event for everyone to enjoy, regardless of experience or background! To participate in the event, you are expected to create a high-fidelity prototype for a UofT-based start-up, Squirl Signs. The youth-based fintech’s objective is to deliver products that aid deaf/hard-of-hearing (HoH) individuals. For the competition, participants are expected to design an app that allows deaf/HoH users create a profile and access features like translation screens and accessibility settings. There should be an emphasis on user research and collaboration through roles like: team lead, data analyst, UX/UI designer, and more. Most importantly, it is an inclusive event for everyone to enjoy, regardless of experience or background.

Additionally, the TDH and DEMA have joined forces to create a highly insightful info session on February 11 to give you tips and tricks on creating an impactful product! Check the linktree on the TDH’s Instagram (@thed3signhub.utm) for more information.

Being beginner-friendly, this competition offers a learning experience that goes beyond. The winning team has the chance to win $80 per member, as well as have their designs integrated into Squirl Signs’ final product. If you prefer not to compete and instead support your friends or make connections, you are welcome to sit in.  Nonetheless, it is a wonderful opportunity for those interested in breaking into the design industry and hoping to become acquainted with fellow designers at UTM. We ensure it will be a great evening with something for everyone to enjoy.

In the past, DEMA and TDH have both organized successful events, from case competitions to workshops with participants going upwards of hundreds and further amassing greatly positive feedback. The Demathon will surely be no different, so hurry! The deadline to sign up is February 13, and be sure to get your submissions in by the 26th at 11:50 pm. We hope to see you there on the 26th for the presentations!
